Abstract

My paper explores how peasant economies not only question the corporate food regime (McMichael, 2009) but also provide elements for imagining and constructing other economies that are based on solidarity and the “buen vivir”. I analyze La Vía Campesina’s concept of food sovereignty and how the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó in Colombia has implemented it. I argue that the counter-hegemonic potential of food sovereignty is that it conceives the production of food not mainly as a commodity, but as a way to guarantee social reproduction and collective well-being based on principles of solidarity, reciprocity, environmental sustainability, and forms of grassroots democracy and self-government.

Key words: food sovereignty, La Vía Campesina, buen vivir, solidarity economy, Comunidad de Pazde San José de Apartadó.
