Music and social criticism in Adorno
Keywords:
Social Criticism, Philosophy of Music, Theodor W. AdornoAbstract
This article analyses some of the philosophical influences in the musical texts of Adorno (1903-1969) with his social criticism, which is presented in the Dialectic of Enlightenment, of 1947. Before writing this work in partnership with Max Horkheimer, Adorno had already studied some of the central elements for creating the concept of cultural industry in his essays on music. After publishing the Dialectic of Enlightenment, Adorno publishes in the late 40s a book entitled Philosophy of Modern Music, which he considers a digression to the Dialectic itself. However, the text about the new music presents concepts that are previous to the Dialectic, since they are present in his criticism towards the musical situation.Downloads
