This article maps out radically embodied cognition, an approach within cognitive sciences that rejects the traditional representationalism and computationalism typical of classical cognitivism. We explore the emergence of radical embodiment and its philosophical roots and present its main features, such as the emphasis on organism-environment interaction, cognitive autonomy, and the emergence of cognition through active exploration of its surroundings. Additionally, we discuss historical influences that contributed to the development of this approach, including the theory of autopoiesis, phenomenology, and American pragmatism. We conclude that, despite its innovative character, radically embodied cognition maintains a dialogue with previous philosophical traditions, establishing itself as a promising research program in contemporary cognitive sciences.
