This article is part of a Masters thesis associated to the Fondecyt research grant for junior scholars nr. 11170810, "Primacy of being or primacy of entity. A comparative study between Henry of Ghent and Duns Scotus". It focuses on the relation between Avicenna’s, Henry of Ghent’s and Duns Scotus’s respective notions of universal. In this section, after a brief account of the life of Henry of Ghent, there is an analysis of the concepts of essence, being of essence and being of existence, and their relation to Avicenna's notion of universal and its modes of being. Later, there is a comparison between the notions of “res a ‘reor, reris’” and “res a ratitudine” and their relation to essences. Finally, there is an analysis of the proper place of essences, together with the question about the possibility of such essences.
