Where are the work cooperatives of the Solidarity Economy going to? An analysis based on the Mappings of Solidarity Enterprises

This quantitative study investigates the path taken by Solidarity Economy cooperatives based on the data from the Second National Survey of Solidarity Enterprises, carried out by SENAES between 2009 and 2013. The analysis made based on the First Mapping’s data (2005-2007) showed that work within these cooperatives takes an emancipatory meaning – since the workers participate in decision-making, collectively manage the enterprise and appropriate its results – on the other hand, it also urges the intensification of this work, which is characterized by instability and, thus, bordering on precarious work. Now, in a context of declining unemployment and of stability in the number of cooperatives in Brazil, the study seeks to determine whether, in fact, these cooperatives are working alternatives that ensure, to some extent, social rights.
