Abstract

This article is the result of a research conducted in the final months of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 in Lisbon’s Metropolitan Area. The aim of this exposition is to report the “impressions” of four visits to poor residential quarters, mostly inhabited by citizens from Portuguese (Official) Speaking African Countries (PALOP) and their descendents. These impressions, as well as the conversations paralleled to the sessions, were registered on a field diary. The objective is to describe aspects of daily life, namely those that are associated to fear and violence, revealed throughout the meetings. These aspects tend not to be considered on researches that are grounded on methodologies with logic-deductive characteristics, but according to the author, this erasure discloses immigration “ambience” and the representation of the accepting country and their citizens.

Key words: reception studies, PALOP immigrants, Lisbon metropolitan area.
