Treatment of contaminated soil: Encapsulation analysis of heavy metals

Abstract

The aim of this work is to study the encapsulation technique, also known as solidification/stabilization in a soil contaminated with industrial residues composed by acid oily sludge. The methodology used was based on column leaching tests, along with chemical analyses of the leachate in samples with increasing amounts of Portland cement CP-V ARI as the encapsulating agent. The results demonstrate the ability of the equipment column leach testing in the analysis of the effectiveness of encapsulation. The encapsulation technique proved to be efficient in the reduction of heavy metals, due mainly to the pH increase and the precipitation of such components. Heavy metals Al, Cd, Mg and Zi had good rates of reduction, all above 90%.
