Abstract

O termo “bioética” foi introduzido na década de 70 pelo biólogo e oncologista Van Rensselaer Potter através da publicação de dois trabalhos, a saber, do artigo Bioethics: The Science of Survival e do livro Bioethics: Bridge to the Future. As obras procuraram mostrar que os valores éticos não podem estar separados dos fatos biológicos. Com o avanço da medicina, especialmente da tecnologia biomédica, novos problemas foram colocados frente ao homem, e Potter, nesse sentido, defendeu que a necessidade de uma ética da vida se fazia presente para além das universidades, tendo que estar mais próxima das conquistas da ciência que afetavam a vida humana.
