Happiness and moral development in David Hume’s philosophy
Keywords:
Hume, Moral, Happiness, Moral development, Modern philosophyAbstract
This paper discusses de way in which Hume conceives the relation between philosophy and happiness. More specifically, we intend to observe the relations that philosophical activity (as well as those who engage in it) must have with common life in order to assure, at least as much as possible, the prospect of a happy life. We shall conclude that one of the goals that Hume wished his philosophy to have was the development of individuals towards a happy life, which ultimately cannot be separated from a virtuous one. To this end, we shall examine mainly the texts in which he seems to have given particular attention to this topic, such as the Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, some of hisEssays Moral, Political and Literary and selected sections from the Enquiry concerning Human Understanding and the Treatise of Human Nature.Downloads
