The notion of ‘public interest’ seems to have an old and proficuous tradition in political studies, particularly in those on media, communication and politics. However, there seems to be an apparent paradox between the very notion of ‘interest’ and the idea of something ‘public’: how can a political action or decision contemplate the myriad of interests of a variety of publics? This paper outlines some aspects of the notion of ‘interest’ in the current debate on political communication. Grounded on bibliographical research, this paper argues that, in the last decades, main works on the subject has dedicated a lesser space to the notion of ‘public interest’ as a single entity in favor of a more nuanced, and cultural identity-driven, notion that contemplates the plurality of a public sphere filled with new forms of activism and group vindications for space and visibility.
