The (inter)relationship between the descriptive and the narrative in an infographic of scientific popularization
Abstract
This paper aims at analyzing the way descriptive and narrative modes operate and relate to each other in an infographic of scientific popularization whose discursive aim is to explain how the solar system was originated. The analytical categories used for the study of both discursive modes in the production of the infographic are based on the Semiolinguistics Theory of discourse study, proposed by Patrick Charaudeau, and on Textual Analysis of Discourse, postulated by Jean- Michel Adam. Upon the analysis, the intrinsic relation between the discursive actions of describing and narrating becomes evident. In the case of the material analyzed, specifically, descriptive procedures – related to nomination, qualification, location, and time-situation of creatures and objects – are identified as responsible for providing the context and the interpretative framework towards the comprehension of the succession of actions and events constructed by the narrative, which is presented as the report about the origin of the solar system.
Keywords: scientific popularization infographic, narrative mode, descriptive mode.
