Abstract

The fundamental aim of Text Linguistics is to broaden its object of investigation in order to apprehend language as a whole, i.e. in its dimension of a potential system as well as a system in use. In its functioning, in fact, the system occurs only as textuality, showing the relevance of texts and their properties. Coesion is one of these properties, providing and signaling sequencial continuity, which, in correlation with conceptual continuity, assures great part of text coherence. Language teaching, adopting a strict syntactic perspective, has focused on the analysis of words and sentences, without considering the activity of language as a discursive and interactional process. On the basis of Text Linguistics, we hope that schools turn their pedagogical attention to texts and their properties, paying close attention to cohesion and coherence.

Key words: text, coesion, continuity, coherence, topic unity.
