Abstract

Scholarly publication is an essential part of doctoral writing today. The increasing frequency of the manuscript dissertation (compendium of publications) highlights the formative importance of the genre of Systematic Literature Review (SLR) in doctoral training. This investigation aims to investigate how doctoral students in Education characterize their experience in constructing an SRL article. With a theoretical framework of enculturation and Rhetorical Genre Studies, the process of writing this genre in a curricular sequence by four students of a Chilean doctorate in Education was investigated throughout three semesters.  The results show that the students recurrently focus on (i) challenges in procedures for searching and analyzing literature on their field, (ii) lack of genre knowledge and writing, and (iii) challenges pertaining to a negative self-perception and perceived low academic authority. Finally, guidelines are offered to institutionally address these challenges in the writing of systematic literature review articles.
