The metaphor in Portuguese grammar: The case of Superlative Construction of Body Expression

Abstract

This paper investigates the metaphorical nature of the Superlative Construction of Body Expression, [Xv de YN/V] (“[ele] quase morreu de vergonha numa tarde de conversas”; “Padre Dito quase estourou de rir”; “O Lúcio rolou de rir com a explicação”), from a cognitive and constructionist perspective. Given the centrality of “language in use” within the theoretical and analytical model adopted, a corpus-based approach was chosen. The corpus used was the Corpus do Português, composed of forty-five million words, allocated in texts of the XIV-XX centuries. The analysis, in general, points to the articulation of different cognitive categories in the institution of the construction pattern being investigated; the semantic reanalysis of the element allocated in X – a full meaning verb – as a scalar operator, in the context of the construction; and the centrality of metaphor in the institution of grammatical patterns.

Possui graduação em Letras pela Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras Santa Marcelina (2006) e mestrado em Linguística pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2010). Atualmente é doutorando da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, atuando na linha de pesquisa Linguística e Cognição.

Neusa Salim Miranda, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora

Possui graduação em Letras pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (1972), mestrado em Linguística pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1980) e doutorado em Educação pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (2000). Atualmente é professor adjunto da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, atuando na graduação e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística. Tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase em Linguística Cognitiva, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: construções lexicais, gramaticais e discursivas do Português do Brasil. Atua também na área de interface entre Linguística e ensino de língua materna. Foi coordenadora do GT LINGUÍSTICA E COGNIÇÃO da ANPOLL no biênio 2006-2008.
