Tourism in favelas has aroused a lot of controversies in the academy, in the tourist trade and also in the coverage of journalism. Considering the importance of the media in the dissemination of the image about these localities and the tourism developed there, this article was constructed with the objective of interpreting how the digital media decodes and disseminates information about tourism in favelas in Rio de Janeiro. For this purpose, the Olympic Games Rio 2016, a period of great visibility for the city, was chosen for the study. For the development of the analyzes, the notion of dispositive, conceived by Foucault and developed by Deleuze, through the proposal of a “philosophical geography”, constituted the theoretical lens of the interpretation. Based on this theoretical inspiration, and through the critical reading of 49 publications spread by 33 digital media, it was possible to perceive that the journalistic discourse on tourism in favelas is controversial and also contradictory. In addition to the proposed thema – tourism in favelas – emerged from this analysis the statement about the favela itself, more broadly, highlighting the strong stigma still linked to these spaces in the interpretation of the media, even in the favorable context lived by the city in that period.
Keywords: favela, tourism, media, dispositive.
