Abstract

How to explain low compliance to social distancing, opposition to vaccines and to other measures to control the Covid-19 pandemic? Although an answer to this question points to demographic (e.g., population pyramid), social (e.g., formal education) and economic differences, we argue that cultural and psychological factors related to the mental models and value systems of the individuals exert decisive influence, mainly concerning the effectiveness of media campaigns. To test this hypothesis, it is necessary to deal with the epistemic relationship between cognition and moral judgments in collective action dilemmas. In this article, we bring the epistemological issue to the fore and present the theoretical basis to investigate the voluntary observance of norms in social dilemmas, from the Habermasian perspective.
