Exchange circuits and social currencies in mainland Portugal: The challenges of a social emancipation culture

Abstract

By proposing new forms of sociability, the solidarity exchange trading networks usually adopt a non-capitalist logic of functioning, which means other ways of producing and reproducing material life. This social phenomenon is usually linked to the need for purchasing basic goods in situations of economic vulnerability. Despite this trend, these exchange circuits, also named exchange fairs, not solely create a virtuous circle of abundance but also make us rethink the current consumption practices. Nowadays, we have observed the emergence and the relatively fast growth of solidarity exchange initiatives in Portugal which stand out due to their capacity for creating, mobilising and strengthening the networks in the community. Some of them have adopted social currencies in order to facilitate the circulation of goods and services. In this paper, we aim to propose an exploratory survey regarding the social currencies in Portugal, discussing their role and receptiveness by exchange fairs. We also intend to know to what extent it is possible to think of social emancipation within the framework of these economic initiatives.

Luciane Lucas dos Santos, Investigadora Pós-Doutoral e membro da Equipa do Projeto Alice | Centro de Estudos Sociais – CES Membro do Grupo de Estudos sobre Economia Solidária (ECOSOL-CES)

Luciane Lucas dos Santos é investigadora pós-doutoral no Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) da Universidade de Coimbra, com financiamento da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), sob a supervisão do Prof. Dr. Boaventura de Sousa Santos. Integra o Núcleo Democracia, Cidadania e Direito (DECIDe), bem como a equipa de investigação do Projeto Alice - projeto internacional financiado pela European Research Council, coordenado pelo Prof. Dr. Boaventura de Sousa Santos. Integra, também, desde 2008, o Grupo de  Estudos sobre Economia Solidária (ECOSOL/CES), que faz parte do Núcleo de Estudos em Políticas Sociais, Trabalho e Desigualdades do CES/UC. Realizou em 2008 uma primeira investigação pós-doutoral no CES acerca da correlação entre a fome e a produção de alimentos no Brasil. Concluiu o doutoramento em Comunicação e Cultura pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro em 2004. É professora universitária há já 19 anos, com uma longa carreira de docência na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), tendo se exonerado em 2010. Atualmente, sua pesquisa está relacionada aos seguintes temas: teoria crítica do consumo, Economia Solidária, redes solidárias de trocas, economias indígenas.

Doutoranda em Sociologia pela Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra - FEUC e Mestre em Sociologia, especialista em Movimentos Sociais e Democracia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais - UFMG. É membro- fundador da Incubadora Social Académica - ISFEUC e membro do Grupo de Estudos sobre Economia Solidária (ECOSOL-CES), dedicando-se à investigação da relação das universidades com a economia social e solidária, incubadoras, tecnologias sociais e conhecimento.
