The evidence of a possibility of an alternative economic-social project in the initiatives of the Solidarity Economy

Abstract

This paper discusses the alternative character of the Solidarity Economy from its origins in the association of employees to the current initiatives based on the fi rst national mapping. We problematize the assumption that Solidarity Economy constitutes an alternative economic model on the basis of existing practices in solidarity initiatives. To achieve this, we discuss the concept of potential, highlighting the need for a linkage to social, cultural, political and economic solidarity actions in contexts in which there are supporting institutions, leadership, a positive perception of the initiative, ability to work and interstices that are adaptable to associative models. Thus, we propose that the Solidarity Economy can consolidate itself as an economic alternative format because we consider the solidarity economic enterprise capable of meeting the multiple dimensions of individuals’ needs.
