Abstract

This article presents three experiences of social economy currently taking place in the Mexican State of Michoacán, by describing their differences and similarities in regards to the actors, dynamics and scope. These experiences are analyzed into a framework of selected notions from the theoretical corpus of Social Economics and Solidarity Economy in order to find out whether they constitute –or not- a strong evidence to claim that it is possible and viable for the region to change the development model imposed for decades. So far, such a model has failed in alleviating poverty for most of the Michoacán’s population. The core question guiding our work is if social and solidarity economy can be an alternative to re-signifying and re-orienting the state’s development into radically different terms.
