Abstract

During the 19th century, the trafficking of so called Kurucas (children) profoundly affected the jê people who dwelled in vast regions in the provinces of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Bahia, especially the Botocudos (Borum). In this article, child trafficking and the concept of genocide are placed vis-à-vis in the analysis of historical sources, according to the thesis that trafficking was not an isolated and specific problem, insofar as it was linked to various policies, such as colonization, creation and management of labor, and consolidation of the sovereignty of the imperial state over the territory.
