The following work brings to the discussion the contributions of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to the study of online social networks. In the first part of the paper, we discuss the basics of SNA, its approach and metrics. In the second part, we focus on the analysis of two hashtags connected to the protests that happened in Brazil in June 2013 that appeared in Twitter during the President Dilma Rousseff ’s pronouncement to the Nation. The first hashtag (#tamojuntodilma - we are togheter dilma) was a supportive one. The second (#calaabocadilma - shut up dilma) was a critical one. Using SNA we show how the first one was organized by a group and the second one emerges as a response to the first.
Keywords: social network analysis, online social networks, networked conversation.
