From iconicity to the graphic plasticity of the instantaneous: the mystery of the photographic witness of action

Abstract

This article seeks to examine in greater depth the issue of the visual regimes in which the photographic image is capable of causing an effect of witness, proper to all genres of visual report. The article identifies the models of such an effect of discourse in images on the basis of the ways in which art historians have thought about the problem of the thematization of the historical in pictorial representations, assessing at the same time their possible repercussions on the level of inquiries about communication through images.
