Presenting the super powerful girls: the discursive construction of female adolescence in Capricho magazine
Abstract
Since the ’1990s female teen magazines constitute an important segment of Brazil’s magazine industry. What implications can the massive popularity of such publications have for the struggles around cultural definitions of femininity? In order to try to answer this question, this article discusses the discursive construction of “the young women of the new generation” in the pages of Capricho magazine. Its goal is to illumine the many ways in which its alleged “empowering” representations of independent and authentic girls connect with the cognate discourses of post-feminism and consumerism. In the conclusion it reflects on the insidious relationship between the specific notion of freedom propounded by the magazine and new forms of social control and regulation.
Key words: female teen magazines, discourse, female adolescence.Downloads
