Abstract

By resorting to the concept of embodiment, this paper analyzes the possibility of affirming the body as an object for communication studies, due both to its relevance as the first medium and to the issues it raises in its relations (extensions) with the new information and communication technologies. This perspective makes it possible to analyze the new media using a material approach to the body as a medium, proposing two new concepts: affectivity and sensoriality. The conceptual framework presented in this paper offers new and more precise tools to analyze the new media, particularly in comparison to those analyses that focus on modern communication processes through more traditional perspectives, such as those based on the opposition between form and content.

Key words: materiality of the media, affectivity, sensoriality.
