The Long Tail in journalism - How the Long Tail theory applies to journalism
Abstract
The internet has generated transformations and opportunities. This article explains the theory of the Long Tail and how it can be applied to journalism. Two “long tails” are transforming journalism, one is related to the change of the value of stories over a period of time, and the other one to the growing number of weblogs that are collectively competing with the traditional media for the attention of the readers. The current scenario indicates that although the traditional sender-receiver model has been broken, the role of journalists will not be eliminated, since they will be responsible for selecting and analyzing the events that will be covered by the press. It also indicates that in the future the media will be compelled to adopt a communication model based on the user’s participation.
