Genre, discourse and genres of discourse: contributions of Carroll, Nichols and Bakhtin for documentary studies
Abstract
During the history of the movies, the need to set boundaries made fiction and documentaries follow parallel roads. This separation did not happen only in the production of films but also in subsequent academic studies. Today researchers and directors try to establish limits between fiction and documentaries but they consider the different aspects films can have. They can be classified, for example, as genre or discourse. This paper intends to verify the possibility of dialogue between those two categories, through the concept of genres of discourse elaborated by Mikhail Bakhtin. This concept organizes and directs the communicability and it lets us verify some aspects of the documentary to apprehend its constitution from a historical and social context that surrounds the documentary.
