Inside borders: urban underworld in Brazilian movies
Abstract
The underworld is part of the urban imaginary. Space linked to decadence and profligacy, home of homo sacer, it is a counterpoint to the ideal of a civilized city. This article examines two contemporary cinematography narratives – Mango Yellow (Amarelo Manga,- 2003) and Lower City (Cidade Baixa,- 2005) – set in the central areas of Recife and Salvador. This paper alternates structural analysis with discussions based on the most apparent senses of the narratives. Identity questions stand out in these studies with a political dimension.
Key words: cinema, city, identity.Downloads
