Abstract

The following paper aims to interrogate the phenomenon of surprise, from the study of the Le volontaire et l’involontaire (1950) of Paul Ricœur, firstly, in his pendular relationship with attention, and secondly, as a lived resonance and as novelty trial and as body affection. Attention and resonance are revealed as moments of surprise. After such clarifications, it will be possible to recognize in turn that surprise is a phenomenon of sinking and concern: to be surprised by something implies to be sunk in a new situation and to recognize oneself involved in it.

Keywords: surprise, attention, affectation, resonance, sinking, concern.
