The article presents the thought of the Jesuit Peter-Hans Kolvenbach for Basic Education. It situates the contexts in which he moved and how his thought was appropriated by the Society of Jesus in order to help outline the pedagogical practice of the educational mission of the Jesuits in the twenty-first century. The methodology of Historical Documentary Analysis was used from the perspective of microhistory. The discussion turns to an analysis related to the Kolvenbachian tetralemma regarding the four principles for the Jesuit formation of people: conscience, competence, compassion and commitment. The result of this study concerns the way in which Kolvenbach developed a way of perceiving education when it deals with an offer of excellence, centred on the person and the message of Jesus Christ that inspires and gives meaning to the confessionality of Catholic Schools as a differential of humanization in a context that is dissociated from the marketizing of education and the entrepreneurship of the school.
