Family and Autism: A Literature Review

Abstract

Autism is a disorder whose severity and chronicity imply in a higher demand for care. Therefore, the family is required to engage and adapt to emerging needs. The present article addresses, through a non-systematic literature review, the impact of an autistic member on the family, as well as autism implications to family functioning. Recently published books and scientific papers were used as sources in this research work. The results show that the impact of autism on family functioning is influenced by the severity of the disorder, the parents’ personality traits, as well as the availability of social support networks. Social support and parent training programs represent alternative actions for the development of coping strategies to be adopted by parents faced with autism.

Aline Abreu e Andrade, Mestranda da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Mestranda em Psicologia do Desenvolvimento pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). É pós-graduada em Terapia Comportamental pela PUC-MG. Possui graduação em Psicologia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e Formação em Terapias Cognitivas pelo Instituto Mineiro de Terapias Cognitivas (IMTC). Atualmente trabalha com psicologia clínica, atendendo crianças, adolescentes e adultos dentro da abordagem cognitivo-comportamental. Faz intervenções com crianças portadoras de Síndrome de Asperger e Autismo utilizando-se do método ABA (Análise do Comportamento Aplicada) e de Treinamento de Pais.

Maycoln Leôni Martins Teodoro, Professor Adjunto da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Doutor pela Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Alemanha) com estágio pós-doutoral na UFRGS. Possui graduação em Psicologia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e mestrado em Psicologia Social na mesma instituição. Atualmente é Professor Adjunto na Graduação e Pós-Graduação em Psicologia da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Tem experiência na área de Psicologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: relações familiares, problemas emocionais e de comportamento, vulnerabilidade cognitiva para a depressão, pesquisa em terapia cognitivo-comportamental e construção e validação de instrumentos psicológicos.
