LMOOCs: Preliminary reflections for the development of communicative MOOCS
Abstract
In this work, we present some initial results of a research that we have developed around the elaboration of Language Massive Open Online Courses (LMOOCs). Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been widely disseminated by recognized universities around the world. In the same way, courses in this modality for language learning are beginning to be developed by some researchers. We have found, however, in previous research, that the platforms on which these courses are available are extremely rigid, with limited resources, which leads to language learning more focused on the grammar of the language than on its communicative aspects. In this sense, by means of bibliographical research, we seek to understand if the MOOC, in fact, present any possibility of offering a language teaching focused on communication. In this text, we present suggestions of digital architecture for the design of a LMOOC within a communicative perspective, we discuss the importance of using video and also we work the issues that involve the motivation and the engagement of the students to the language learning in a massive course with special emphasis. From these reflections, we conclude that there are five characteristics that must be respected in the development of a LMOOC: adaptability, specialization, modularity, reusability, and ubiquity.
Keywords: LMOOC, language learning, digital technologies.
