The socio-discursive imaginaries of timorese students about the importance of the Portuguese and Tetum languages
Abstract
ABSTRACT – In this paper, I intend to identify the socio-discursive imaginaries present in 24 texts from Timorese high school students and, in addition, the universe of knowledge and beliefs that sustain these discourses. Such universes, according to Charaudeau (2008a, 2008b), are socially shared and built. The socio-discursive imaginaries, according to sociolinguistic theory, correspond to the world comprehensible models about a topic, in the case of this study, about the importance of the Portuguese and Tetum languages for the students’ public investigated. I intend to notice with such investigation, how much the young students discourse comes near or distant from the political discourse widespread in East Timor, related to its official languages choice. The results point to a partial approach of these imaginaries, as well as the relevance of a coherent linguistic politics in a bilingual country.
Keywords: socio-discursive imaginaries, portuguese language, tetum language, East Timor.
