Abstract

This paper aims to compare teenagers’ use of some conversational discourse markers in Madrid and Buenos Aires, and is based on the analysis of recordings of spontaneous conversations of youth language in the Corpus of Adolescent Oral Language - project (COLA). From the perspective of variational pragmatics, the authors compare the discourse markers, analyze the functions, determine the frequency, and the proportion per thousand words. The gender question and the position of the markers form part of the analysis. The result of the analysis reveals that the variation of discourse markers is not exclusively determined or influenced by the speaker’s characteristics, but also by the persons to whom the message is directed.
