Literacy development as the goal of foreign language teaching in public schools
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to discuss foreign language (FL) teaching goals in the context of school education. Based on the principles of language education framed by the Brazilian national curriculum parameters for both Elementary and High School, it is proposed that the goal of FL education should be literacy development, that is, fostering the learner’s participation in different and various social practices involving reading and writing in his mother tongue and in the FL. This means that the FL class should challenge students to get engaged in activities that focus on language use, discussing relevant and interesting topics and reading and writing different discourse genres as a means to increase their participation in different communities of practice and construct participant citizenry. Based on this educational agenda, this paper proposes and discusses a FL teaching unit for the context of public schools and reflects on the implications of literacy development goals for the classroom planning and practicum.
