Abstract

The Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre and the Nadir Afonso Contemporary Art Museum in Chaves are paradigmatic works of Álvaro Siza’s architecture in the 21st century. More than housing the collections of modern artists, these museums highlight the critical permanence of Modern Movement principles, reinterpreted through the notion of place. In contrast to the Bilbao effect and the logic of spectacle architecture, Siza designs buildings that reject the media icon and instead affirm the centrality of spatial experience, tectonics, and territory. This study adopts a comparative and critical methodology, based on bibliographic review and project analysis, to examine convergences and differences: introspective monumentality and labyrinthine circulation along the Guaíba; horizontal linearity and territorial integration along the Tâmega. It is argued that, by grounding architecture in place, Siza proposes contemporary alternatives to the tensions between globalization and identity, demonstrating the relevance of modern permanence as a critical strategy.
