Emergências Climáticas

Thematic Issue

Architecture, Urbanism, and the Digital Space in the Context of Climate Emergencies

Dear readers, researchers, and professionals,

It is with a mixture of urgency and responsibility that we present this thematic issue of ArquiteturaRevista dedicated to climate emergencies. The urgency of the topic is compelling, especially in the context of Rio Grande do Sul, a territory that has been directly affected by extreme climate events of unprecedented magnitude. The recent and severe floods, mass movements, prolonged droughts, and extratropical cyclones reveal a scenario that demands a thorough, multifaceted, and interdisciplinary debate, encompassing reflections and actions on the role of the State, the work of professionals, and, fundamentally, the contribution of qualified scientific knowledge.

The climate crisis is a global reality with profound local repercussions. As Masson-Delmotte et al. (1) warn in the IPCC report, anthropogenic global warming is causing "widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and biosphere." The urgency in addressing this topic is heightened when we consider that "climate change is already affecting every inhabited region across the globe, with observed impacts ranging from more frequent and intense extreme events to gradual changes in ecosystems" (2). In the specific case of Rio Grande do Sul, the recurrence of water-related disasters, such as those observed in 2023 and 2024, makes it imperative to rethink territorial planning, architectural design, and urban resilience strategies.

This context makes it unequivocal that these are not isolated natural disasters, but manifestations of a growing climate instability, which demands deep reflection and transformative actions from all areas of knowledge. ArquiteturaRevista, in line with its mission to disseminate scientific works related to the territory, the building, and the digital space, and in its commitment to building ethically responsible knowledge, recognizes the centrality of climate emergencies in contemporary intellectual production. Architecture, urbanism, and their associated technologies play a crucial role in building a more resilient future.

Topics of Interest

For this issue, we especially welcome works that address, but are not limited to, the following thematic axes:

- Environmental Comfort in Extreme Scenarios

Research exploring design strategies and materials for thermal, luminous, and acoustic comfort in buildings, facing scenarios of intense heat, floods, and extreme temperature variations. This axis seeks to broaden the discussion on how the built environment can mitigate the effects of adverse climate conditions.

- Resilient Architectures and Urban Spaces

Analyses of architectural and urban design solutions that strengthen the response and recovery capacity of buildings, public spaces, and communities in the face of extreme events. This axis includes case studies, conceptual proposals, and typomorphological, structural, and functional innovations, at both the architectural and city scales, that promote the resilience of human settlements.

- Innovations in Norms and Legislation for Architecture and Urbanism

Critical and propositional analyses aimed at advancing technical standards, building codes, and master plans. This axis seeks contributions that incorporate the principles of climate resilience and sustainability throughout the life cycle of constructions and in territorial planning, reflecting on the necessary and constant updating of performance standards in the face of new climate challenges.

- Urban Projects and the Incorporation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS)

Articles on innovative studies and projects in the implementation of NBS (Nature-Based Solutions), green infrastructure, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). Deepening this topic aims at risk reduction, water and climate regulation, and the improvement of urban environmental quality, valuing the integration of natural ecosystems into urban design as a strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

- Territorial Planning and Risk Management

Research on territorial planning as a tool for mitigation and adaptation to climate emergencies, including risk area mapping, ecological-economic zoning, and relocation strategies. This axis fosters dialogue with Urban Law and Disaster Law, encouraging analyses on updating legislation such as the City Statute - Federal Law No. 10,257/2001 (3) and its articulation with the National Policy for Protection and Civil Defense - Federal Law No. 12,608/2012 (4).

This issue represents a call to action. We argue that qualified research and debate are essential tools for formulating effective responses to the challenges posed by climate emergencies. We invite the academic and professional community to submit scientific articles that deepen the understanding and propose innovative solutions for this scenario.

This call for papers will be open from June 30, 2025, to September 30, 2025. Depending on the number of articles submitted and the editorial workflow, our goal is to publish a full issue dedicated to the theme in the first half of 2026. Alternatively, a thematic session will be held within one of the Journal's regular issues, also in 2026. It should be noted that manuscripts on any topic can be submitted during this period and will follow the parallel editorial flow. After September 3rd, submissions will be paused for editorial activities for the upcoming issues, reopening in the first months of 2026.

We hope that the works published here will inspire new approaches, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute to building a safer and more sustainable future for Rio Grande do Sul and the planet.

Sincerely,

The Editorial Board of ArquiteturaRevista
