Sectorial earning inequality versus education in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (1998-2008)

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the behavior of income inequality among workers of the main sectors of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre from 1998 to 2008. It uses the data of PED-DIEESE and the Dagum decomposition applied to the Gini index and schooling groups available in PED. The inequality is decomposed into within, between and transvariation. The results show that the schooling is responsible for explaining a large portion of the Gini across all sectors studied. Inequality fell in industry, construction and commerce. The only exception was in the service sector, which increased 0.03 points. Along with falling inequality, there was a decline in the share of education to explain it, except in the service sector, where its share has increased.
