Analysis of tobacco exports in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil (2001-2012)

The aim of this work is to analyze the tobacco exports competitiveness in the period 2001-2012, thus, it was used the model Constant Market Share as well as Revealed Comparative Advantage Index and Regional Orientation. Data of those exports and the world exports and imports of the European Union and China during the period 2001-2012 were collected from the System on Foreign Trade Performance Analysis, the Secretary of Commerce and the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database. The results indicated that the state of Rio Grande do Sul showed revealed comparative advantages in tobacco exports in the whole period. Regarding the sources of growth in the first period, the competitiveness effect is what most contributed to exports. In the second period, the effect of the world trade growth was predominant. Regarding the regional orientation, the export of tobacco to the European Union is more intensive.
