Brazilian oil exports and the economy’s specialization in natural resource-intensive goods in the period 2000-2012

Since the 2000s, it is possible to note a significant increase in natural resources goods exports in the Brazilian economy. However, the discovery of oil in pre-salt reserves and the high international commodity prices, while providing competitive advantages for Brazil in international trade of this product, it can enhance a specialization in commodities exports with low added value. This paper analyzes the energy commodities production and exports in Brazil in the period 2000-2012. For this, an index of export specialization called Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) will be built. The results indicate that the fuels participation in Brazil’s trade account is relatively low, but it is increasing, and we can identify signs of oil exports specialization in last few years.
