This study examined the condition of study and work of young people in Rio de Janeiro. The age group examined in this work was of young people from 12 to 23 years old. The response variables were: “only study”, “only work”, “work and study” and “don’t work nor study”, the year of the analysis was limited to 2009 and the data used were from PNAD. In the observed scenario, it was found that most young people in the youngest age group (12-14) only study – this is pattern given by the obligation of attending school at this age, which covers the age of 6 to 14 years old. The exclusive study was higher for women at all ages, trend also seen in Brazil (Oliveira et al., 2011). For men it was found that the condition of “only work” is greater than for women, which confirms the tendency of man’s early transition to the labor market. Considering the condition of the young in the family, it was found that the “only study” group is greater for son/daughter at all ages, although this effect is greater for women. It was found that the discrepancy of age and school level affects the study condition and increases the condition of inactivity.
Key words: labor market, young people, transitions.
