Abstract

This paper aimed to present the crime's determinants in Paraná State, in 2000 and 2005. Crime has been a major concern of Brazilians in recent years. The search for solutions for these social problems increase as the crime evolves. In Paraná, the situation is aggravated by the fact that this state is located in the region that makes border with Paraguay and Argentina, admittedly problematic, increasing the effects of socioeconomic variables. Through an econometric analysis, it could be noticed that increases in levels of education reduced crime rates in both years studied, 2000 and 2005. The income variable was positively related to the increase of crime rates in 2000. In 2005 this variable did not affect crime. The municipalities bordering Paraguay had, on average, crime rates higher than other ones in Paraná in both years studied, proving the negative influence of this frontier area to combat crime in the state.

Key words: crime, education, income, frontier region.
