Abstract

This study applies indices that allow expressing the relative rigor of the pesticide MRL regulations between countries that trade grains and oilseeds. The results provide inferences in terms of food security, especially with regard to the difficulty of exporters in changing their production processes to meet the requirements of importers. The results suggest that the highest compliance costs may occur in the adaptation to the MRL determined for Glufosinate-Ammonium and Glyphosate in the corn market, for Chlorothalonil in soybeans and for Paraquat and Spinosad in wheat exports. This topic is important and requires attention in view of the constant updating in the products and permitted levels of required pesticides, as they can affect the productivity of the crops. It is, therefore, a relevant issue for the development of trade policies aimed at agri-food sectors in countries that seek to consolidate and expand their trade.
