Identification keys for families of water beetles occurring in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Abstract
In this work we present an illustrated identification key of larvae and adults of the families of water beetles occurring in southern Brazil. Only families with truly aquatic species are included. No data is given on half-aquatic families and/or species. The study includes the families Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, Haliplidae and Noteriadae belonging to the suborder Adephaga and the families Hydrophilidae, Hydrochidae, Hydraenidae, Elmidae, Dryopidae, Psephenidae and Scirtidae of the suborder Polyphaga. This study aims to solve one of the biggest problems in identifying specimens in this group, that is, the lack of identification keys for families based on material collected in the state itself which only includes taxa occurring in the state. It also includes visual information, which is necessary for the correct use of the key.
Key words: aquatic insects, Adephaga, Coleoptera, Polyphaga.
