Soybean and Polish settlers in southern Brazil: The case of Ceslau Biezanko and other characters (1930-1934)
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the case of a Polish immigrant and agronomist, Ceslau Biezanko, officially recognized as the introducer of soybean in the plateau of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, among Polish settlers in the present city of Guarani das Missões, in the early 1930s, long before the soybean boom in the region. Despite the official recognition, we intend to insert Biezanko in the context of the relationship of soybean with Polish settlers through other intellectual introducers of the plant, in the 1930s, both in the Polish community of Paraná state and in the region of the plateau of Rio Grande do Sul, where controversies involving the pioneering introduction of that legume emerged.
Keywords: soybean, Polish people, Ceslau Biezanko.
