The milestones of Beija-Flor farm: The strategies of affirmation of property in the midst of the implementation of the Land Law of 1850
Abstract
In this paper we discuss the strategies of farmers around the affirmation of property in the midst of the implementation of the Land Law of 1850. This analysis was developed on the basis of an investigation of land disputes involving the Azambuja and the Ribeiro families, in the town of Taquari, during the 1860s and 1870s. We seek to show that the impact of the Land Law on the transition to capitalism in Brazil through the consolidation of private property did not reach its initial project. The reason, on the one hand, is that the regularization of the land structure did not reach the expected scope and, on the other hand, the networks of social relations in which the farmers were inserted continued to be the most important factor for the affirmation of the possession of property.
