“Una página de historia eterna”: The nation narrated by the Comisión Nacional de Museos y de Monumentos y Lugares Históricos
Abstract
The article analizes how the Argentinian nation’s history was narrated by the Comisión Nacional de Museos y de Monumentos y Lugares Históricos (1938-1943). Besides defending and preserving the historic and artistic heritage, the institution (created in 1938) also carried out several activities aimed towards the disclosure of national history, such as the placing commemorative signs in historic places, distribution of cards displaying images of monuments and creation of museums. Based on speeches held during these activities, we have found that certain facts and characters from the past were privileged by the members of the Comisión, especially those related to the country’s independence and the consolidation of the Argentinian republic. The narrative introduced by the institution seems to have been at the service of nation-building needs, representing the latter in its victories and unity.
