When sex, gender and sexuality meet: reflections on gender research and its relation with the Queer Theory on the basis of theology

Abstract

The article starts by clarifying the place from where it is constructed: theology. It affirms that theologians are looked at with suspicion by scholars working with gender issues because they are supposed to be connected to a normatizing discourse, within theology, because they work with gender issues. It then presents a definition of Queer Theory tracing the historical development from feminism to Queer Theory, focusing on how these theoretical fields are represented in theological construction. Before advocating embodiment as the “place” where sex, gender and sexuality meet – therefore, embodiment is a hermeneutical principle to evaluate and construct new ways of being human – it shows how those three concepts, and as a consequence gender and queer studies, must be connected in the reflection that intends to liberate all human beings.

Key words: gender theories, Queer Theory, feminist studies, gay and lesbian studies.
