Labyrinths around the city: workmen’s villages in Pelotas (RS) 1890-1930
Abstract
This article analyses how the discussions about the construction of the workmen’s villages in Pelotas have started. It uses local newspapers of the studied period as its source of information, as well as official documents of the city hall, especially those written by Alberto Coelho da Cunha, municipal clerk for about 40 years. Without focusing the differences between slum tenements and the workmen’s villages, this work demonstrates how the villages have benefited businessmen instead of workers, since it hasn’t reached its goal: to improve the life conditions of its low income population.
Key words: workmen’s villages, history, Pelotas.Downloads
