From the history of the frontier to the history of the West: Fragmentation and crisis in American Western history in the 20th century
Abstract
Western history, the field of American historiography devoted to the studies about the West and the frontier, had a peculiar disciplinary trajectory in the 20th century. It first focused on the history of the frontier, in the USA and abroad, and, in the second half of that century, on a regionalist perspective. In the wake of this shift, a profound feeling of crisis and fragmentation emerged, mainly as a result of its academic marginalization after the 1960s.
Key words: American West, Western history, frontier.Downloads
