Republic versus Monarchy: The historical consciousness of the 1880s
Abstract
This article discusses the erosion of the monarchical symbolic system by the emergence of a consciousness of the historicity of time and of a democratic and scientific culture in a significant part of the Brazilian society in the 1880s. This created a mental and affective openness toward the new and became a strong and effective tool for republican propaganda.
Key words: Brazilian republic, symbolic system, political culture.Downloads
